After joining a few SISTERLY Sea Swims, our Head of Marketing, Emma Brennan, found herself feeling calmer... "I'll be honest, when I joined SISTERLY and everyone was telling me to join the SISTERLY Sea Swims, I wasn't convinced. The idea of willingly getting into cold water sounded more uncomfortable than relaxing, and I definitely wasn't expecting it to become something I looked forward to.
But after joining a few times, I got it. Every time I got out of the water, I felt incredible. Clear-headed, energised, calm and somehow more present. It wasn't just during the swim itself either, the feeling stays with me for the rest of the day.
To gain a bit more understanding of why it feels so good, I spoke to our resident nutritionist and wellness expert, Georgie Murphy MSc DipNt mBANT mNTOI, to understand what might actually be happening in the body when we step into the sea."
1. Sea Swimming Can Boost Your Mood Naturally
Cold and cool water exposure has been linked to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and increased feelings of wellbeing. Studies suggest that cold water immersion may stimulate dopamine, endorphins, and adrenaline — the chemicals associated with alertness, motivation, and mood regulation. Regular cold-water swimmers have also reported lower anxiety and improved self-confidence on swim days.
2. It May Help Reduce Stress Levels
Research into cold-water immersion has shown promising links to lower stress levels and improved nervous system regulation. Exposure to cool water creates a short-term “stress response” that the body adapts to over time, potentially helping improve resilience and recovery from everyday stress.
3. Sea Swimming Supports Better Sleep
Many swimmers report sleeping more deeply after a sea swim, and emerging research supports this. Studies on regular cold-water immersion have linked it to improved sleep quality and reduced next-day anxiety.
4. It Can Support Circulation And Recovery
Cold water causes blood vessels to constrict and then reopen as the body warms up afterwards. This process may help circulation and reduce feelings of muscle soreness and fatigue, which is why cold-water immersion is often used in sports recovery.
It is important to note, however, that women and men differ in their response to cold water. As Dr. Stacy Sims (renowned exercise physiologist and author of ROAR) says, rather than an ice bath, a moderate cold plunge (14–15°C / 57–59°F) or a dip in the sea (similar temperature!) after a heavy session is preferable for women.
5. Summer Is The Perfect Time To Start
You don’t need freezing temperatures to feel the benefits of sea swimming, and summer waters in the UK and Ireland are often ideal for beginners, helping the body adapt more gradually while still offering the mental clarity, energy boost, and sense of achievement that outdoor swimming is known for.
Sea swimming is also one of our favourite ways to reconnect with nature, spend time outdoors, and create moments of calm away from screens and busy schedules. And if you join one of our SISTERLY Sea Swims, you get the bonus benefit of community.
